Pytanie: How can Christianity bring us a more moral society if it is based on faith and not works?

( Wstecz )

Answer #1:

Action follows thought.

Answer #2:

Atheists such as me realize that every situation is unique and requires a response suitable for that particular situation. We are not blindly rigid in our beliefs or actions.

Morals come from socio-culturing, parents, peers, and life experience.

My friend Christian claims that only those who believe can live a moral life and those who do not believe in god have no moral compass. He claims to live a moral life, not because it is the right thing to do, but because his god expects everyone to be moral. The fallacy with his reasoning is that mitzvahs and morals should be followed because his god and holy book dictates rules to us and not for personal, philosophical spiritual reasons, or simply the secular humanist approach of treating others with dignity.

Compare and contrast:

ATHEISTS - who have an intrinsic sense of positive and negative behaviors and actions, understanding that each situation is unique and calls for flexible rules and reasoning. Atheists possess an internal compass – call it a golden compass -- to help guide them toward positive and negative outcomes. Atheists possess great courage by taking a stand on something they comprehend, not some set of rules blindly followed.

MY FRIEND CHRISTIAN, who would have no sense of morality in absence of his god or bible. Christian’s only sense of morality comes from an external source yet he possesses no internal compass to guide him through life. He constantly asks, "What would Jesus do" because he appears completely devoid of internal sense making or judgment. Christian only has his book to point to for his beliefs.

From responses I've seen in R&S, some Christians are jealous of us, believing we atheists are getting away with debauchery or something wicked without having to pay some type of penalty; that we get to live a life without morals and then don't have to suffer the consequences. Not sure by what irrational logic they arrive at that conclusion. As an atheist I am moral, kind, and selfless because it is the right way to live. I have no expectation of any reward for proper living. Wouldn't a true Christian be good in absence of salvation, or are they only good to be saved?

Answer #3:

Pip, you just aren't thinking. Even Socrates says that morality is not works. You can do a bad thing for a good reason and a good thing for a bad reason.

Please don't add more ignorance to this world. We need goodness and decency in society and you are doing your best to discourage that. Stop.

Answer #4:

Well, it's complicated. Ignorance and poor education give rise to a number of undesirable things: Poverty, crime, and religiosity, for example. Places where people are better-informed and better-educated naturally tend to be less prone to religion, less prone to crime and less prone to poor financial decisions.

I don't think that crime and religion are directly related; they're just two different products of the same social ills.

Answer #5:

Christians/Catholics are historically huge charitable contributors. We're in South Africa, South America and North America (as well as countless other countries) bringing aid and spiritual guidance. You obviously know little about the tenets of the Christian faith.

Answer #6:

Most Christians know that it does matter what you do. As James states it in the bible, faith without works is dead.
"In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:17
"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." James 2:26

Answer #7:

Generalization. The question applies to more people than only Christians. Also, Christianity cannot bring The United States a more moral society because of the separation of church and state. And, it's pretty fair to say that there are Christians who have trouble keeping their faith. I cannot imagine that ignorant atheists and other unbelievers would make this any easier for them.

Your question, as it relates to other nations, rests upon sheer generalizations. You really haven't said anything. Besides, the ancestors of Israeli Jews lost two temples and were exiled from their homeland. Why not ask this question to their descendants? Your bigotry is obvious.

Answer #8:

Christianity calls us to show our faith with our works.
Read the book of James.
We have failed in that aspect.

Answer #9:

"How can Christianity bring us a more moral society "

but many do do good works in the name of their Lord, not all of them defer their responsibilities to "god" through prayer and do no more than wait for paradise they don't deserve . Many follow christ whose outlook fosters good being done in his name, even if he was fictitious - i care not! What i deeply care about is quality entering this world and people do add quality to this world in the name of Jesus that they may never have without being Christians

"Why are countries like sweden who have a minority christian population more moral than a country like south africa who has a majority christian society?"

now that probably because those countries do not have as high an incidence of the disenfranchisements (that are inherent in all religious dogmas) affecting their populace. they too are good but are good for good's sake not jesus' sake and that gives them more diverse and effective scope to their quality output than adherence to only a basic morality ever can ( let's face it the basics is all jesus brings to the table ) what the christians have is a good way what the scanidnavian countries have is simply a better, more inclusive, less exclusive, way ..and as you already know what i care about is quality.

Spiritual atheist.

Answer #10:

Your perception of faith is flawed; Faith comes from the Word of God and if God says to love one another that's the faith. The world doesn't say love your neighbor, there are no laws structured to protect the law of Love, the world is operating under the law of works an eye for an eye.

Forgiving someone is something that is viewed as only coming from God and no one else has the power to forgive; and yet the heart of the law is Love, but the power of Love that keeps the law is also from God. And they who have this love shed abroad in their hearts are born of the Spirit of God who is given to us, Romans 5: 5 and 1 John 3: 1 and Romans 8: 3-4

You are viewing the religious and not the followers of Christ ; not all who say LORD LORD shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.

But lets not view the splinter in their eyes lets talk about the beam you have created with judging them according to the splinter you just brought up.

D o you think you will escape the judgment you have just magnified, as though with discerning it you are become righteous? No not in the least of any ones imagination.

Have you the Love of God which would never take note of wrong doing making a list of them who do it wrong? Shall we who are established in God's righteousness rather be the example of Christ, and does the Koran speak of this law of God the law of Christ , i speak as a fool; why then your judgment? Isn't really to exalt your pet religion?

In the world people speak evil of another to promote themselves, are you not as one of them who have a spirit which is of the world? What have you to answer from the Spirit of God?
